Putting Your Gift to Work

We embrace the vision of our founders by striving to be a champion for the elderly poor of Washington, D.C., working to alleviate their hardships where we can and always doing so in a manner which recognizes their self-worth and promotes their dignity and independence. The mission of the Lisner-Louise-Dickson-Hurt Home is to provide extraordinary health and life care services to low and modest income seniors of the District of Columbia, empowering them to live their lives to the fullest.

As a non-sectarian, non-profit residence, we take our vow to care for the whole person seriously. Ours is not a fleeting relationship but, rather, one which is built upon a resident’s life experiences and which offers each of them the opportunity to live life to the fullest even during the concluding years of their lives. We are dedicated to ensuring the highest quality of life for those senior citizens of the District of Columbia who are often most underserved due to lack of financial resources sufficient to support themselves. According to “A Snapshot of the Elderly Population in Washington, D.C.” from the D.C. Office on Aging (January 2008), 10,326 individuals aged 65 and older live in poverty in the District of Columbia; this represents nearly 10% of the total population of individuals aged 60 and over living in Washington, D.C. No matter their resources, the elderly deserve exceptional care and the Home delivers it to all of our residents every single day. Accomplishing our mission includes:

Comprehensive Support Services – We are a full service organization offering short and long-term care, and physical and social rehabilitation programs conducted by a highly skilled medical, nursing, and support staff.

Person-Centered Care – While an individual’s needs may change during the course of residency, the Home maintains a service delivery system that addresses the many issues that may confront an aging person, all in one facility. We recognize the inherent benefits of client-centered care which affirms and fosters each resident’s capabilities and interests while promoting their overall wellbeing. For example, we emphasize continuity and familiarity and work to assure that, as much as possible, every resident receives care from the same nursing personnel on a consistent, daily basis.

Ongoing Improvement – The Home maintains its standards of quality through continual assessment of care methods, regular training, and facility and equipment upgrades. Federal and local inspections have resulted in outstanding reviews of the Home’s quality of care while comments from residents and other clients consistently indicate a high degree of satisfaction with the Home’s services.

Positive Work Environment – By fostering an environment that promotes confidence, self-expression, and learning, our employees grow professionally and gain the mutual respect and trust of residents and their families. The dedication of our staff is evident in the more than 100 cumulative years of service to the Home of our 9 department heads and the fact that 57% of all of the Home’s employees have worked here for more than 5 years.

Serving the Community – With our outreach programs to the greater metropolitan area and the access provided to our services, we will continue to be a conscientious contributor to the Washington, D.C. community and beyond. The Home is an organization committed to excellence, with a clear vision and a passion for delivering outstanding care to our residents. It has been a presence in the District of Columbia for over half a century and represents a true legacy to its citizens both now and in the years ahead.
